From employee to employer
Shortly after completing his A-levels studies (High school) in 2016, Calvin was trained by EPTF under the Ubuntu Social Capital initiative: Enterprise Development Program. Being out of School and having ends to meet, Calvin started by working at a friend’s Studio in Eldoret town. His focus was to refine his skills in Photography and videography and eventually venture into the same business.
“Opportunities present themselves to every one of us, those that are prepared grab and make the most out of them”. Such an opportunity presented itself to Calvin when his employer offered him stake at a new photo studio he had just opened in Eldoret town. With support and advice from relatives as well as EPTF, Calvin raised money to buy stakes at this new studio, moving him from an employee to a business partner. Eventually, his partner sold off his shares to him making Calvin the business owner and manager.
Calvin has since employed two young people at the studio and at times engages others on a casual basis, depending on the magnitude of work at any given time. He covers weddings, bridal parties, and birthday parties among other events. This has contributed immensely to his growth as a business person. The revenue from the studio has not only enabled him to sustain himself and his employees but also given him the ability to consider and venture into other forms of investments and businesses.
