EPTF had the privilege of participating in a Multi- stakeholder forum on Tree Planting Advocacy (Climate Action) held on 18th January 2023, in Moiben, Uasin Gishu County.
Beetree Self Help Group, one of the groups participating in the SMC 20010-Enterprise Development Initiative project in this region registered their Tree Seedling Nursery with the new Forestry office established in Moiben Sub County.
EPTF trained Beetree SHG on entrepreneurship skills and supported them in setting up the Tree Seedling Nursery. The registration of the Tree Seedling Nursery will go a long way in creating opportunities for the SHG and will have a far-reaching impact in this region.
As a registered entity with the forestry service, Beetree SHG and its members will benefit by receiving certified tree seedlings from Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI). The Nursery will be among the suppliers for the Kenya Forestry Service, whenever the agency carries out tree planting drives.
Beetree SHG was selected as a hub for training women and youth groups in Moiben Sub-county on establishing tree seedling nurseries. This is in a bid to increase tree cover in the region. Moiben was singled out as having one of the lowest percentages of the target tree cover in this green belt region.
During the forum, Green Earth Ambassadors, one of the partners, provided an initial one thousand tree seedlings to be planted in the region. Members of Beetree SHG were picked as champions of the Carbon trading campaign. Each champion will plant 100 tree seedlings and be paid Ksh100 for every tree that they successfully nurture for a year.
Benard Kibet, EPTF’s Project Officer in Moiben, observed that the forum presented a good platform to connect with partners.
